Israel Keyes was born on January 7, 1978 in Cove, UT… we think. Calling him “difficult to track down” would be a vast understatement. He was born at home to parents living off the grid, his birth does not appear to have been recorded, and the Social Security Office knew nothing of his existence until he joined the Army at 20 years old.
He was also deeply invested in covering his tracks, which can probably be expected from a serial bank robber and arsonist suspected of killing eleven people. He often traveled across state lines to stymie investigators trying to solve his crimes. This makes it especially important to find out where he was on a given day.
Our researchers sorted through several thousand pages and published the most exhaustive Israel Keyes Timeline we have seen to date, including detailed citations that can be used to verify the research. Most of the information comes from FBI Press Releases and FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) disclosures, including the FBI Israel Keyes Records Vault (also downloadable as a searchable, page-numbered PDF at Israel Keyes: Searchable FBI Vault).
For those of us who are visual thinkers, though, reading a list of dates and locations can seem a bit abstract. We are pleased to announce that we have made the information available in the form of a Google Map.
Our purpose in sharing this information is to generate further dialogue about the Israel Keyes case in the spirit of collaborative research.
